Protecting Your Skin from the Sun

It’s summertime and chances are that you’re making the most of the outdoor season. Whether hiking, swimming, or enjoying a day at the pool, it’s important that you take proper care of your skin. Over the years, our experts like Dr. Arash Akhavan have cultivated a few smart approaches to enjoying the summer while protecting your skin from damage:

  1. Put Sunscreen On Before Clothes
That’s right. Putting sunscreen on when your clothes are already on makes it more likely that you’ll miss an important spot. Instead, opt for slathering on the broad-spectrum SPF 30 minimum after you dry off from the shower and before you get dressed.
  2. SPF Needs 20 Minutes
Another key reason why you should put your sunscreen on immediately after showering is to give it time to sink into your skin in order to protect you. It takes about 20 minutes for this process to complete itself and for any sunscreen’s protection to take effect.
  3. Double Duty
Since you are applying sunscreen, there are many options to choose from that can also simultaneously address other issues. For example, if your skin is red or sensitive, opt for a sunscreen that has anti-inflammatory ingredients.
  4. Keep Sunscreen Fresh
Active ingredients in sunscreen can decrease their effectiveness with time. Be sure to check the expiration date on your sunscreen before you apply.
  5. Don’t Forget the Scalp
If you’ve ever burned your scalp, you probably know all too well the horrible aftermath of it: peeling scalp skin. People often forget to protect this delicate area of the body. If possible, we also recommend doubling up with a hat.
